Welcome Home, Tita Cory

On August 5, 1887 (122 years ago today) -- Jose Rizal arrived in the port of Manila after a long sea voyage and five years of life, study, and travel in Europe and abroad. The Noli Me Tangere was already a triumph and a serious source of trouble. Below, I read his diary entries of August 4 and 5 as the ship he is on, the Haiphong sails past Bataan peninsula and into Manila's harbor. His pensive, reflective mood describing the previous night and a sunset on Manila Bay, seems apt on this melancholy but moving day...

Two Entries in Jose Rizal's Diary

The National Centennial Commission published all of Rizal's known written work (novels, letters, diaries, poems, drama, newspaper and journal articles) in 1961. In particular, you can look up REMINISCENCES AND TRAVELS OF JOSE RIZAL, of which I seem to have only Volume 1...

Between Cory and Rizal...Cory is the better of the two...she is more accessible as a human, a mother, a friend and a patriot. Rizal was good...but his mystique belongs to another age. Cory belongs to all freedom loving humans going forward. It's no contest.

I say this not to subtract from Rizal...but to add to the Philippines another hero to admire and emulate...Rizal is to cerebral to take sometimes...Cory is more from the heart, while she always stayed focused on the mind as well. Maybe there is now room for two Filipino heros of the ages.
