Watch the Explainer Episode Tonight: "The Perils of Partition"

I'll be the guest on Manuel L.Quezon III's The Explainer talk show on ABSCBN's ANC channel this evening at 6pm, with replays throughout the week in case you can't catch it live. We'll be discussing the Memorandum of Agreement on Ancestral Domain between the GRP and MILF, which I think will implement a form of ethno-religious apartheid--a veritable dismemberment not just of Philippine territory but of the Filipino people themselves. Topics sure to come up are the Indigenous Peoples Rights Act of 1997; the history of armed struggle in Mindanao and the prospects for peace; President Arroyo's desperate attempts to amend the Constitution, as well as the roles of Malaysia and the United States.

Gloria Arroyo and her apologists have performed a useful function. They have held a mirror up to our faces and showed us what kind of people we are. As our hero Dr. Jose Rizal put it so bluntly : ‘Tal pueblo, tal gobierno’." (As the people are, so is their government). Have we become a nation of one tyrant and 80 million cowards?

Ethnic religious conflicts are alien to Pinoys. We have been extremely tolerant. If Roman Catholic bigotry is present,it is just on a thin surface, just like Roman Catholicism.

But by the look of things, our Glorious Queen is opening a Pandora's Box of troubles her PhD brain can never imagine. This is the most worrysome part. Under the Glorious One, bigotry willtake deeper roots.

I live and breathe Mindanao, so let me add that this idea of Muslims being given their own country is alien to us, too.

But co-existence with them? Yes, why not, many of us cannot wrench ourselves away from our past. Even the lowliest carenderias in our local airport here have their own “ Halal – Muslim food served here” signs. Because it seems now that every other person I get close to in public is Muslim.

And BTW, maybe we should just resurrect the older generation Muslims, since when we were growing up calling them Moros was a big pejorative, a big no-no. It still is. But now they want to call their own country, Bangsamoro? The country of bandits?

Is there a like to this on youtube or something? Really, I would like to see it, but I don't live in the Philippines.
